Mormon Leader Appeals to Media to Make Polygamy Distinction

Elder Quentin L. Cook, an Apostle for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, appealed to news media today to make a clear distinction in their reports between the Church and the polygamist sect in Texas which has made headlines throughout the world. He praised news media that are making this distinction but expressed concerns about others who are perpetuating mistruths about the Church, whose members are commonly referred to as Mormons. Elder Cook said it is very confusing to the public when some media use "Mormon" to describe the Texas-based polygamous group which is currently under investigation for possibly incidents of child abuse. He reiterated that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with over 13 million members worldwide, is not connected in any way to small sects that practice polygamy. Drawing contrasts between the Church and polygamists, Elder Cook said, Church members do not live in isolated compounds, arrange marriages, dress in old fashioned clothing or wear unique hairstyles. Rather, they are contributing members of the communities in which they live throughout the world, get married at the average age of 23, and are well educated. In fact, 60% of Church members in the United States have some college education, which is 10% above the national average. More: http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnew... © 2008 Intellectual Reserve, Inc. i think the use of Mormon should really go out of style with our church. that way there wont be any confusion if those other churches want to be called mormon.

i don't agree. as much as I hate all the lies about the church, freedom of speech means freedom of speech. we can't stop them from saying that stuff, we can only correct them and provide accurate information.

The media doesn't "create the confusion" Mormons create the confusion by blaming everyone else for not having esoteric knowledge of your historic past - and then you use public ignorance to perpetuate your objective to redact your history. Until recently, ALL Mormons practised polygymy. Probably ALL of your church directories have Jeffs, Barlows and Steeds apleanty. Probably many of your members over 30 have eight grandmas. Don't blame the media.

This is ridiculous. Of course there is a connection. A hundred years doesn't erase the historic connection between LDS and FLDS. This would be like The Church of England making a statement of "no connection whatsoever" with the Catholic church. Try this experiment. Look at how many Jeff's, Barlow's and Steed's there are in the international LDS church directory. Go ahead. Have your Mormon feud, but don't expect the rest of the world to vacuum our brains and redact our history to suit yours.

When news outlets contact the Church to request permission to film in a polygamous sect's temple or feature the Salt Lake temple image in a story about the FLDS, this is evidence of the even greater confusion that exists in the general public. Such confusion is equivalent to thinking that Jehovah's Witnesses are a breakaway sect of the Roman Catholic Church. Journalists that recognize this distinction have the obligation to inform and correct the public and I thank the majority that do.

Where is this comment even coming from, other than out of hatred for Mormons? It has no relation to the video or to any post I have seen.

I'm not Mormon... but who are you to say that someone isn't Christ-Like. That's all Christian means. It's a term for someone that belives Christ died for their sins, nothing more. There is no religion called Christian.
