It was the wings they added on to the car that caused it, you can see them taking the car up, fold over, and smash the roof. If they did their job properly, he might of made it.

Thats not the whole story, this is part of a 1 hour movie about it all and Powers was called in at the last minute to do the driving from memory. Takes balls to be strapped in and do that, I doubt the people laughing here would do the same, i know i wouldn't. I wonder if the ramp is still there after all these years?
