"Bridge Over Troubled Water" performed by Simon & Garfunkel in December 2003 in Madison Square Garden, New York during the "Old friends: Live On Stage" tour. ------------------------ ---------------- MY OPINION IN THE PAUL SIMON-DEBATE BELOW There's a lot of arguing going on about whether Paul Simon did or didn't "ruin" the song in this clip. I say, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel make an excellent duo. They started out as a duo, succeeded as a duo and will be remembered as the great duo they are. Obviously, there are two part of this duo, both contributing to this (and many other) masterpiece(s) in their own way. Sure, Paul tried to do something different with the song this time, which some may find irritating, but without him this song wouldn't even exist, and neither would this duo. Whether Paul ruined this song or not is a matter of opinion. I think of it like this; his way of performing this song this time is his way to interpret it, and after all, since he wrote the song, he knows it better than anyone else. Art did a wonderful job singing this, both in studio, in this clip, and every other time he has sung it, and he sure deserves cred for that as well as Paul deserves cred for writing it and, principally, creating the magic behind it. But after all; why complain? Even if you dislike the way Paul sings the song this time, I think you would find it very hard to honestly say that the song is ruined, or anywhere near that. So; why waste your time on complaining when you might as well accept this version and enjoy it? (I apologize for eventual language errors since English isn't my first language. Feel free to correct me if anything is written incorrectly)

agreed, however, Democratic Senator Sam Ervin's cover certainly comes close! IRONICALLY anyway... with his known opposition to civil rights and social welfare legislation

Paul Simon wrote that song by himself. He is always growing and improving and improvising. He is a genius. If he wants to change that song, it is his right and I like it.

Todo es opinable y como lo hizo Paul, bien o mal lo es; sucede que escucharla en la voz de Art por tantos años cuanto menos no le doy el crédito que otros le pueden dar. Everything is opinion and as Paul did, good or bad it is; happens to listen to the voice of Art for many years at least I do not claim that the other can give. No lo dudes, están entre los más grandes de la historia musical. No doubt they're among the biggest.

At one time, this song was a hot point between the two, and was a part of their original breakup. Paul wanted Art to sing it, but then had second thoughts, and regretted giving it to him, especially when they were starting to fall apart at the time. Paul recaptured it years later in his solo Certral Park concert, and put a good gospel twist to it. That reflected that, and, the fact they can now be friends, are no longer bitter, and can share that song like that is a mark of their friendship.

No creo que Paul haya maltratado la canción. Esa versión libre (Paul) dentro de la interpretación clásica (Art) añade belleza al tema. Me parece una obra de arte lo que han hecho los dos. Son y serán los más grandes. I don't think Paul mistreated the song, much to the contrary. His free-style rendering adds to the classic rendering by Art, making what was already a masterpiece an ever greater work of art. They were, and still are, the best.
