you can't cast it, silicon and carbon are sublimed into gas and then condensed as a crystal, that crystal is then sliced up and polished into the wafers.

This material is made from sand and carbon. Hard to believe that it could be so incredibly expensive. I'm fairly certain that there are cheaper ways of producing it.
