She was Thrice married and divorced, had people managing her money and helped themselves so she wind up with nothing for a while till she came back in Pinky '49 and Member of the Wedding and the first Beulah (both 1950) on Tv. I remember her with the Billy Graham Crusade the last few years of her life in the 70's, she also appeared on talk shows to the appreciation of audiences who remembered her long and illustrious career. RIP

She was a great talent in her day. She was able to conquer vaudeville, records, radio, tv, theatre. That's why she was known as MISS ETHEL WATERS. It was a long journey from the back alleys of Chester, PA where she was born the product of a rape. She had a hot temper from what I read, a hard childhood, being illiterate which some of the old 'colored' performers were, and of course the prejudice which was prevelant at the time.

The song was suppertime from a 1933 Broadway show called As Thousands Cheer. The songs in the show had to do with the headlines of the day It was a song about a lynching. Other songs from that show were Easter Parade and Heat Wave also sung by Ethel Waters. Summertime is from Porgy and Bess.
