Atheism isn't rising, it's the following of irrational belief systems that's falling.
Bout fucking time....

What a mouth-piece for Atheism. Gotta love'em!

"The evidence convinces him that theism is not true, and his logical position, then, is that of atheism. We repeat that the atheist is one who denies the assumptions of theism. he asserts, in other words, that he doesn't believe in a God because he has no good reason for believing in a God. That's atheism -- and that's good sense." -- atheist E. Haldeman-Julius
Atheism is a stance; it's a choice. Ignorance (no clue; not given a chance to choose) therefore can't be labeled the same thing.
gmn545 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
"Atheism is accurately defined as the denial of the assumptions of theism. The theist affirms that there is a God running the universe; he declares that the idea of such a God is necessary to an understanding of life. What is the position, logically, of the atheist? He will not say in a mild, uncertain fashion that he doesn't know whether the idea is true or that it is an open question. He has studied carefully the case for and against theism..." continued...

relax gm, I haven't even read your comment, i wasn't talking about you
and now that i have.. babies ARE atheists, as are people that have never heard of "gods".

The question can a believer perform a moral action that a non-believer cannot is quite unfair. The believer and unbeliever are of the same human condition. We all share commonalities regardless of faith. What motivates a person to perform a moral act is the real issue. Christians are taught love of God and neighbor should be the instigator of our actions. What Hitchens should investigate is what happened to the poor and outcast in ancient civilizations before the church.

"100% commitment to denying gods"
err...did i say that?
"any doubt negates your atheism"
Duh. Obviously not. Richard Dawkins said god's highly improbable, leaving doubt, but is still an atheist.
My point is, don't box those who haven't been given the chance to even think about an issue, who are at 100% ignorance (like a baby) into the same position as those who CHOSE to be. ex: innocence. its like saying "if you haven't done good yet, you're bad" even if you were just born. lol.
PrexicKehdaki (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
that's the idea
PrexicKehdaki (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
thank you jeremy,
so many people think atheism is a 100% commitment to denying gods.. and that any doubt negates your atheism and makes you the "more rational agnostic"
Jeremyguru (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Most agnostics are atheists, unless they claim to be "agnostic theists" which is an irrational position.
Yes, babies are without knowledge, which means that HAVE NO BELIEF IN A GOD, which makes them atheists by default. Atheism isn't always an explicit position. |
