really, first of all, you want a Bb trumpet. You got to look at your money range too. You could go all the way with a Xeno ($2000-ish) or a intermediate horn ($1100 to 1400-ish). Also, do you play trumpet? Jazz is really meant for those with playing experience. I don't mean like high school band and all that, but enough experience to get your range, tone, and knowledge up to level.

well I'm not an expert but I've played French horn for awhile. As far as tones go, these are usually acheived with different pieces or accessories, such as mutes, placed in the bell of the trumpet. Some amount of tone/inflection can be produced via the musicians ambrochure (pinching/slackening on the jaw) which is more technique.

I would like to buy a trumpet but I am confused about tones, in what tone is the trumpet supposed to be? Is it even supposed to be in a tone? I want to learn to play jazz. Can anyone help me?

i didnt say i had anything against smooth jazz. i just dig something with a human groove. when i listen to smooth jazz, i often find myself asking what the cat soloing is connecting with, and if its a computer then it lacks human connection. I'd rather have that human connection from everybody rather than just the front cat.

you got something against the smooth jazz? not everything has to be classic swing with jazz in high tempos, how can we progress forward if we limit ourselves to that? it's good, i like it a lot, but still... with heavy fast paced rock bands, even ballads are needed sometimes too man.
