No, they were just examined later, the story actually started in late 1969. I can't add the link here, but type "Paul Is Dead" into Wikipedia for the full story, or there are plenty other resources for it online. Paul did suffer an auto crash in 1966 - he fell off his scooter, scarred his lip and broke a front tooth (see the Paperback Writer video). Ironically, his friend that drunken night was Tara Browne, the young man who really did eventually "blow his mind out in a car" in the song.
