1995 Texas vs. TCU - First Half

1995 was the last time Texas played TCU, who as a 17 point underdog, surprised the home crowd with hard play, almost pulling off the upset. Texas was ranked in the top 10 before the game and finished the year 10-2-1 ; TCU finished 6-5, but came into the game 6-3. That same week Texas Tech beat SMU 45-14 TCU's opening drive was met by a hard Westbrook hit, but they managed to get a FG out of it with a nice run and then a dumpoff pass to RB Davis. UT stops them on 3rd down on a Westbrook PBU which could have been a PI. Texas counters with a drive including a couple of Ricky runs, a catch by Justin McClemore and a James Brown scramble. TCU also defends an end zone pass and UT has to settle for a tying Phil Dawson FG, 3-3. TCU gets the ball and Chris Carter has a crafty INT with a nice return into TCU territory. Shon Mitchel then bursts down the sideline for an uncontested layup TD, kind of looking like Ramonce Taylor. Dawson adds the extra pt and it's 10-3 Defenses tighten up as Hickerson has a sack. [i] James Brown has a perfect VY vs. Okie St scrample including the pump fake on the run, although the defender did not go airborne.[/i] Did VY see this in the 7th grade and copy it?? TCU returner # 3 John Washington takes a punt 65 yards breaking several tackles for a TD, tying the score at 10. Mike Adams returns the favor with a KO return, but the drive stalls as Ricky is tackled and Dawson gives UT a 13-10 lead. TCU then drives and ties it up with a FG at 13; Taje Allen providing a highlight pass break up near the end zone. Teams go into halftime tied at 13, not the blowout expected by the low level crowd of 60,000 who came out "because the weather cleared up and the sun came out"
