Many people though name the best based on which was the best for its time. Using this method, I've heard many experts say that the P-51D was the best fighter we've ever had. I don't know if that's considering the F-22 of today though.

Sorry, but the Russian Su-27 Flanker and prototype Su-37 Super Flanker would decimate a JAS-39 Gripen if you ask me. Hell, it'd probably destroy our Tomcats and Super Hornet as well as give our Raptor a run for it's money.
