Work still needs to be done, but this is very impressive. It might not be too long before technology like this is practically incorporated into photographs.

I use 3D Max and Photoshop as well. I am currently using Google Earth, 3D Max, Sketchup and Photoshop to recreate the small town I grew up in.

If the person who did this put the origional photo in the far back we would not see the black cutout which is likely just the colour his 3d program was set to render in. Sorry...this long winded response was for SunnyShawFilms. If you want me to send you some examples drop me a line and i'll show you. It's time consuming but pretty easy.

I normally use Photoshop and 3D studio max. You can find a tutorial called 3d Matte Painting and Camera Mapping from the gnomon workshop. You basically cut your image into different layers baced on distance with alpha, and drop them onto planes in 3D. Set up a camera and use a modifier called "camera mapping" and place your planes at a distance from the camera which corrisponds with the depth in the origional photo.
