oh man what you said is sooooooooooooooo right....never thought of it that way...and it makes sense cause he said that he can actually learn by repetition unlike the Sammy Jankins he had formed in his head...

Even in the commentary of this film, the director didn't admit as to how everything happened. Remember, everyone lies to Lenny. Everyone. So there's no real truth. The audience is treated the same way Lenny is treated: with deception. It's anyone's guess as to how it happened.
