It's just his number, but to help him visualize what the word looks like (it helps to write the word down instead of just saying it) he pretends to write it with his finger on the back, so he can see what it looks like.

My sister does spelling bees too, I know what you are talking about. He was actually writing the word with his finger on the back of his number. It is called ghost writing, it helps you to be able to visualize what the word looks like.
