This is what the stripper clips were for. I own a number of milsurp rifles which feed from the strippers - they are very convenient, cheap (no need for extra mags), no load to carry around and ammo is always organized. I like the stripper clips better and it's too bad this idea was abandoned. I don't even use the detachable mags for my SKS and prefer to feed the internal mag from the strippers.

I've done this by hand. It hurts your fingers after awhile, and it's slow. This gadget is cool.

I wonder how long those loaders have been in existence.
