A photo collage of events in Chris McCandless' life mixed to an acoustic song I composed and dedicated to the ideals and values he embodied. Although I've never met the man, I've been deeply touched by his spirit. Mp3 of the acoustic composition I created available at: http://etienne.lebel.googlepag... I think just the fact that he went after what he wanted, following his own beliefs, wether or not people agreed with them, is what makes his story so unreal. People like to hear that kind of thing, and when they do think of it, they idealise it, because most are too afraid to do it, so we will idealise people who do. I just think his story is crazy, so unreal, nature in its most simplist form.

You know, not EVERY person wants to run off and live in the wilderness; but sure, some do and some have - even successfully. My beef with this is the romanticizing of his choices. He had NO idea what he was doing and was starving himself from the start, he was just plain unprepared. As someone who grew up in a remote area, that just smacks of "city-kid with no idea what it's like living in 'the wild' goes off and gets himself killed." Experienced outdoor enthusiasts consider him a fool.

Chris had a spirit that longed to be away from this commercial society we live in. Every person deep within them longs for the same thing. Chris just had the balls to do something about it!..That's why people love him.

Why people idolize this person is beyond me. Imagine how shattered his sister, mother and father were when they couldn't find him, and when they found out he was dead. He had NO clue what he was getting into. There's a huge difference between reverence for nature and respect for nature. He may have had heaps of the former; but was clearly lacking in the latter. Good intentions, tragic outcome.
