It isn't necessary to use an algebraic method to explain ratios. Its too confusing for some people.

I like his way of cross-multiplying better than the way our teacher taught us, which was the second way he described.

That was awful, way too complex for something that is very simple:
Share £24 between two people in the ratio of 5:3
Combine, Divide, Times
Combine the ratio number 5:3 (8)
Divide it by the total (24 / 8= 3)
Times the answer by the ratio numbers needed (5x8= 40, 5x3=15)
