Though there were a number of Scots who were in fact absorbed into the Boerevolk. True while this song / video is awakening a number of Boers to their heritage: there is also the old phenomenon of others attempting to claim the Boer heritage as their own -which was a convenient political tool used during the 20th cent which actually marginalized the actual Boer people in the process.

I am Dutch but I perfectly understand Afrikaans, maybe because I was grown up in the utter eastern part, where our dialect is quite close to German.
Anyway, I support Bok.

Yeah but I dont think the guys supposed to be taken so seriously. All he is singing about is a legend/hero. I'm pretty sure he's not encouraging racism but try and explain that to the average Afrikaner. Also remind them that just because they're Afrikaans it doesn't automatically give them boer heritage. I think I'm actually Scottish/Boer. Ha ha ha. In response to January, yes it has become great for research but also for racism. Pity hey?

I support Bok as I do like this video. He & the song / video appear to get misunderstood when the prime motivation for the song was to INFORM the youth about their history as Bok pointed out that their are just A FEW lines devoted to the Anglo-Boer War in the school history books. This song & video reminds the Boers of who they are & of their past.

Interesting stuff. Just to clear things up the term dutchman covers Afrikaners and Rooinek covers the English speakers. Lets face it they both probably couldn't be further from the truth. But to keep it simple we use the words, its tradition. Now I'm not even sure if you support Bok or not? I'm going to watch him in concert in two weeks time when I'm on holiday. I'll post the video of me getting donnered dik by the boere. Did I mention my Grandpa was Ossewa Brandwacht? What is it?
Pinard7 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
This was exactly my point. The main reason why the Dutch can not really understand Afrikaans is due to the fact that Afrikaans sprang from Frankonish - not Frankish - which was strongly influenced by Malay as well as French & German to a noticeable degree as well.

Furthermore one must remember that it would have been rather IMPRACTICAL for the Boers to have ever adopted a chauvinistic form of racism considering that they often had non-White allies & required to have friendly relations with their neighbours. I think much of the alleged racism of some Afrikaans posters can be ascribed entirely to the current political situation which often promotes an overall Black unaccountability & hegemony to the expense of White people & other minorities. |
