Even though i'm glad Smith didn't end it this way, i feel that the ending works because the whole Clerks movie is about real moments in someone's life, and stuff like this does happen in real life. One minute you're ready to close up shop and go home, the next you're dead.

Yeah, there'd be no clerks 2 but the turn out of the entire movie would be interesting. A little darker when watching it the second time.
