A television advertisement screened in Australia around 1987 to alert people to the dangers of AIDS. This advert has generated considerable controversy since, as the "grim reapers" in the ads - which were meant to symbolise HIV, were taken to symbolise gay men.

I remember here in the States when this spot was featured on a show with commercials that were once banned or never aired because of their questionable content. I never forgot it. To me, making a point of this magnitude and giving it a face, so to speak, is the most responsible kind of television and kudos to the writers and directors of this ad. It may be morbid, but how morbid is it to attend countless as well as unnecessary funerals of those we know and love?

A while ago in the early 90s i was living in America and a psa about aids came on the tube. Anyhow, the commercial really freaked me out, The commercial started with a person in a mask and unitard while an announcer was rifling off the the emotions caused by sexual relations, thereafter the actor stripped off so many masks. upon then the announcer said something along the lines of "AIDS" then the actor ripping off his final mask with a skull imprint on it. has anyone else see or hear about this?

This ad freaked me out when I was little. I was too young to understand what it was all about and thought it was about being extra careful when playing Ten Pin Bowling. The myths and misconceptions when being young!

ah yes, but it was made by an australian organisation in the 80's, they didn't realise that people in today's society would be watching it on the internet all over the world.

We have 2 remember the context in which the ad was made. There were no ARVs back then; being infected meant being condemned to die. The medical field had only identified the virus a few years before and was still studying it; since the MF didn't know that much, it couldn't talk with authority to the public, in a way to calm everyone down. Think about SARS a couple of years ago - people freaked, but as we learned more, we progressively calmed down. And SARS is nowhere near as scary sounding ;)
