sad. Didn't think I'd find any videos about Rhode Island because it's such a small state. Station fire was horrible though.

I disagree. I think the bystander effect is very much applicable in this case. If you were standing inside a crowded building and a fire suddenly broke out, you'd find that most people would react according to the reaction of those around them. If no one else flinched or paid attention to the fire, most others would simply assume it was a controlled fire which was somebody else's responsibility to extinguish, and that it did not pose any imminent threat.

That's not the bystander effect, that's just mob mentality. The bystander effect is when people who aren't affected (i.e. bystanders) don't help people. They diffuse responsibility on some archetype of the "best suitable person for this situation" and don't actually confirm if there is one present. They just assume that there is. What a shame, this thing. I can only imagine the cocoanut grove fire being even worse.

Just be sure when you go to a club, know your exits. If you want to see the real footage, google 'crowd manager training'; several fire marshal offices have free training that incorporates the video (State of MD fire marshal, for instance). This is good training for anyone who works in or owns a club. When you see how fast the fire travels, you don't have much time to save yourself and others in such situations.

I read somewhere that Longley did (in fact) make it out of the club safe. Witnesses saw him outside with his bandmates. But get this: he immediately went back inside to try and retrieve his guitar. I had always thought he must've hesitated before leaving or took too much time trying to gather his personal belongings, and then got disoriented and/or blinded by the smoke. But to go back inside once you're already outside and out of harm's way, is beyond belief.

Maybe Ty was just in shock. They said the fire spread very quickly.

If the building had sprinklers, it might have been a totally different outcome
