I don't think the films should portray Clegg any differently than in the book tbh, because it creates a completely different atmosphere.

thats not how it happens in the book by John Fowles, in the book, he tricks her into thinking he's hit a dog or something like that, and then hits her into the camper van and chloroforms her , or chloforms her first.

"worst mismatch" - the two actors you mean? Yes, because of Samantha Eggar's beauty one of the few tragic film endings I didn't agree with - see "Peeping Tom" for a disturbing film with an apparent meaning; this movie was just nasty....
Yes, Terence Stamp was pretty good, however from what I've read Eggar was totally not the Miranda of the book.
