Thought about modding one of the Thinkgeek bluetooth 'classic' Ma Bell handsets? Obviously something based on a still-older design would look much more fitting, but I don't know of any companies that put out something pre-rolled along those lines.

Yes, the battery was discarded for recycling. The Joule Thief circuit pulls additional energy from these "dead" batteries. Makezine called it "Precycling." For more info see my Flicker account under About This Video. The magnets have no function other than to make an electrical connection. Thanks for asking! : - )

ok so why did it say "dead" battery? does that mean it still works enough for the light as long as you have the magnets?!
