KelTec P3AT Review

Here's a review of my KelTec P3AT in .380 ACP caliber. The gun is a true pocket gun, it's extremely thin and small in stature. It holds 6 in the mag and 1 in the chamber, and is of a locked breech design - this means that it can handle some hotter ammunition, and can be lighter than other .380 pistols since it doesn't rely on blowback action. The barrel locks into the slide, and then droops down to clear the slide during recoil. The gun is double action only, but does NOT have a repeat strike capability. The hammer is partially cocked by the slide, and then cocked the rest of the way by the trigger and released at the end of it's movement, similar to a Glock. However, unlike a Glock, this gun has two resets you feel in the trigger when letting the trigger go back forward, one at the beginning of travel, and one at the end. The one in the beginning will give you failure to fires, while the one in the end will make the gun go bang. The Armalaser system is just awesome for this gun, and extremely tough and durable. The gun is incredibly accurate for it's small size and price, and has been 100% reliable (save for operator error in the beginning). It is worth noting that this pistol doesn't have a last round hold open, and does have a pretty wicked recoil if you're not holding the gun extremely firmly. Think 'exploding credit card' and you'll do fine. The ejector is missing on my gun - it's a small little square that just sits in the frame and is easily lost. KelTec was nice enough to send me a free replacement, which I also lost. The gun even runs 100% WITHOUT an ejector!

Great vid. I carry one of these and my Mini-Grip whenever I go out. Can't imagine (at the moment, anyway) carrying anything the size of some of the guns my father carries. They make this look like my NAA .22 revolver.

I have a P3AT and I love it. My other gun is a Walther P99 .40. But it's waay easier to carry my .380 just about anywhere. Very little problems with jamming, and I have run over 200 rounds through her. I think that it is very important to CLEAN THESE GUNS REGULARLY. Clean it when you buy it, after shooting (of course) and most importantly, clean it during long shoots. If your are putting more than 2 or 3 clips through it, you really need to clean/oil the gun, as it gets gunked up quickly.

update: tried out the Cor-Bon ammo last weekend and it cycled well (only put 3 clips through it though - the stuff's expensive!). Interestingly, the only issue I had with it was in chambering the first round. It wasn't as smooth as the FMJ. Other than that, the gun worked well.

The gun shoots well, however it is not a great gun for people with really small hands or therefore really large hands. The reason is that people who have very small hands often can't absorb the recoil causing limp wrist in which the gun jams. My female companion had trouble shooting the gun without it jamming. The gun is so light due to its size that it has a large bite. In the hands of someone with very large hands the gun will just never feel right caused by the trigger-guard and grip sizes.

Whatever's on sale. I don't have reloading dies in .380 yet.

So far, I've just used regular jacketed ammo - Magtech 95gr FMC (today I put another 50 rds through without problems). On the way home from the range, I bought a box of high velocity Cor-Bon ammo that I'm going to try next. I'll post if it gives me any problems.

what ammo do you use? My NIB p3at just completely failed, not even 20 rounds.

Well, finally broke down and bought one of these today. Took it straight to the range, put 50 rds through it and the gun worked like a champ. Not one problem. I'm not quite as accurate with it as I am w/my .38 (which I got @ a month ago), but it wasn't bad (you're right about the factory sites though). What I really like is how small the P3AT is - nice pocket gun. Hey, I'd like to carry my 1911A1 w/me all the time, but realistically I won't. It's too big to hide (especially w/t-shirt & shorts).

Money. $200 .380 vs. a $500-1500 Officers frame. Someday, but tack in the college budget - firearms are low on the list of things to buy.

Okay cool. So what turns you off of a .45 compact?
