I think you should read more about fluff of each race and for your first army decide who you like most. That's how I decided, maybe later I will start other army but now I'm just waiting for my first figs :D
And btw, your in much better situation then me, I don't have any friends who play this game and it's more expensive where I live... :/

I forgot to mention that while you won't have the full experience of playing Warhammer 40,000, there is definately a great form of fun/pride that comes from having a huge item in front of you to touch and paint in great detail, it is pretty close.

You know if you don't want to spend that much money, but still have the Warhammer 40,000 experience why not try Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War and its sequels Dawn of War: Dark Crusade and Dawn of War: Soulstorm?
Dawn of War is basically the real time computerized version of the same table top game with access to each of the races, their units, story, and such while only having to pay a faction of what the table top version would require.

necrons or tyranids or eldar
necrons slow but very storng
tyranids fast and close combat
eldar storng fire power

You could get Dawn of War, have a more fun experience, and save money at the same time :D

Thank you, I am leaning toward the Tyranids since theres more of them and my friends have said they are pretty good. but what about the price it seems like a little much. anyways thanx.

Thanks for the comment.
Well, if your deciding on your first army it really falls under your preference, if you want just uber powerful units that are ridiculously hard to get rid of go for Necrons or if you want to buy tons of models and have a massive army that looks great on the tabletop, go Nids (Tyranids by the way)
Each army has it's good points and bad points, I'd recommend talking to your friends about it and they should point you in the right direction!
Hope this helped a bit!
