That's true, but gunpowder is one invention that could be put off. Yes, gunpowder was an integral invention for militaries around the world, but I think that wars like the American Revolution could have been won with ballistas, crossbows, and longbows if it came down to that. Also, Native Americans had gunpowder. This being said, gunpowder would have been invented sooner or later. Gunpowder is still a huge invention, but life would go on if it didn't exist.

Don't forget the idea of using gunpowder for weaponry came from the East: Fireworks were originally used as signals, then used as missiles in the early Dynasties of China.
