He did say READ in the studio version. He's got years of lyrics to remember and this was the only pop track on Low. He didn't want people to buy this album when it was released. Side1 was ok with this and Breaking Glass. But upset to most die hard Bowie fans. I loved Speed of Life and played Always Crashing continually. But side2 made me think wow. As a kid I had never heard music like that. Brian Eno had a huge impact on Bowie and I know it must have later influenced bands like Kraftwerk.
