My computer came with Windows 98 on it and it runs Vista perfectly fine. I think I got it around '99, and the Display (which I got the same time) has drivers in Vista...

I agree. Though I can't say that I don't understand tech, quite frankly, I'm releasing a Linux Distro today. Anyhow, I got Vista installed on 256MB RAM and it was way faster than XP, WITH all the visual enhancements (not Aero though can't run it, and it is ugly). The only thing incompatible with my computer is my graphics card, and guess what, it is old. So not a surprise. Though upgrading the RAM was a good idea :)

Then again Ubuntu doesn't use the BSD Kernel. If it stopped using the Linux Kernel it wouldn't be a Linux distro. So no matter how much Ubuntu "strays away" it will be Linux till they change the Kernel.
