http://www.mediaed.org Jean Kilbourne's award-winning video offers an in-depth analysis of how female bodies are depicted in advertising images and the devastating effects of those images on women's health. Addressing the relationship between these images and the obsession of girls and women with dieting and thinness, Slim Hopes offers a new way to think about life-threatening eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, and a well-documented critical perspective on the social impact of advertising. Slim Hopes is a lively and engaging program suitable for a wide range of audiences at high schools, colleges and universities. Using over 150 ads, it informs as it entertains, allowing viewers to build an analytic framework for considering the impact of advertising on women's health.

this is a great speech but I very much disagree with the fact that women's bodies haven't changed in America! It seems the fatter the average American, the skinnier the models are in the magazines. I'm not for anorexia or obsession with food in the least but encouraging girls to be happy with themselves isn't going to help them escape obesity and heart problems! You are beautiful when you are HEALTHY!

It's not the ribs that are attractive. A very tall, broad shouldered small waisted girl is the best body type for showing off high fashion. She's practically a walking clothes hanger, no body to interfere with the design. People are attracted to the design, and think they are attracted to the girl. But in plain clothes, Levi's and a tee shirt, Paris Hilton types are NOT the favourites. Are they?

Isn't it likely that you have issues deeper than wanting to be like the girls in magazines? I'm not saying magazines don't hurt. I remember hours spent trying to get airbrushed makeup and hair looks. But wanting to be a light feather lifted in the wind is NOT a visual, but a physical metaphor. Possibly you want to FEEL differently, not LOOK differently.

Fantastic video! Thanks for uploading this. What's the song and performer at the beginning of this clip?

whatever happened to the good old days where models could be size 12? Now days you have to have your rib cages sticking through to be considered "attractive".

It's dangerous when in countries like U.S. teenagers r getting breast implants; the Dept of Health & Human Services has spelled it out that you cannot breatfeed children with implants! It affects childrens' &(when they become adults) their immune systems, they r 5x more prone to allergies &many studies point to lowered iq or deficient cognitive abilities. &NOW in advertising we ARE SEEING BIG BREASTS EVERYWERE.THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR FUTURE, 4PEOPLE. IT'S SAD,but SURGEONS WILL DO IT ANYWAY FOR $

beauty is in us all... found in the imperfections which over rule our bodies. i agree people need to CHALLENGE these impossible expectations placed upon us, however its easier said then done.
