Back when polygamy was still practiced, there were no laws that said "a man can have only one wife" (meaning laws by the state or people that governed everyone, not the church) so in fact, even people NOT of the LDS faith were polygamists. (In the Book of Mormon)in Jacob 2:26-35, it states that we should not be polygamist, and that any who do shall be cursed. That is why "mormons" today do not practice polygamy, added the fact that it is illegal, ant the church doesn;t allow illegal actions.

polygamy really only appears to be a tool for traditional mormons to have sex with more than one woman. it doesn't appear to have any altruistic / non-selfish value at all to me.

Exactly. This isn't about religion, and being honest for God. It's about lots of diversified sex for men, and the taxpayers get to pay for it. That's the real truth, hidden behind a religion, and the mormon church is not taxed. What a racket! These people are no better than the mob.
