Amazing. This is the sort of thing that makes channel 4 stand out from any other TV channel.

Everything I have read about this points to the aspect ratio Kubrick intended to be 1.85:1. In fact, since the mid 50's most movies shot commercially have been projected 1.85:1, partly in due to show more of the image than television pictures which had been making inroads in the entertainment industry. Most non-anamorphic movies are routinely framed with a safety area between the framed-for picture and the edge of the negative. 1.37:1 is by most accounts an obsolete standard since the late 50's.

But when it was projected in 1:85:1 it was actually cropped. If it was projected in 1:37 than we would actually see more of the picture frame as "Kubrick intended."

I watched this the other week and, being a huge fan of The Shining, I thought "WTF! How on earth did they do this?" It is superb stuff from, dare I say, channel 4.
