Stony, Im sorry but looks like ur the one who's ininformed!
In the indian classical firmmiment in Mumbai and Kolkatta
These two are NOT top tier!!
A ggod example of top tier sitarists would be Shahid Parvez, Kushal Das, SHubhroto Roy Chaudhary,
As far as Sarodists are concerned its AAshish Khan, Brij Narayan, Amjad ALi KHan and Tejendra Majumdar
If you listen to what they are playing you'll hear its relatively simple stuff. A basic Yaman gat in simple rythm.
CInt on next post

The gat start on the unusual point of the 3 matra.

Tbats nonsense. Its time we moved away from archaic principles. Shujaat Khan is a stalwart of the sitar, gharana snobbery aside.

What contrasting capabilities!

In indian classical music a gharana is basically a "school" of a particular style. They are musical lineages following a particular musical style. Some gharanas play a "Mine is better than yours" game of rivalry. It is silly but very human. These two players are from two of the biggest rival gharanas.

what does the word Gharana mean? at a gues id say its styles or schools of playing?
stoney68 (September 11, 2007 at 1:11 am)
The beauty of this performance is that it is a meeting of gharanas. Does not happen often mostly because of EastCoast/WestCoast style "we are the only valid gharana" bullsh#%. Enjoy this and praise their open minds and huge talent.

Please!!!, if you are going to say either of these players are anything but top level players you are totally uninformed or maybe high. Both of these players are considered by the general ICM community as unquestionably great players. If you think you know enough about ICM to criticize them you are either ignorant, or you are a gharana bigot that cannot accept the greatness of players from other gharanas. |
