Football has always been called football so I guess she was do an american take on football trying to steal the name etc.
Either way it hasn't worked. The olympics and FIFA only accept one football.

Football was invented in 1863 in the UK.
The term soccer is a nick name for the football association. Just as rugger is a nick name for rugby union.
The official name for football is of course football.
There are no other sports called football. There is aussie rules football and american football but these are not football.
Americans just hate football because they were not very good at it, so they invented gridiron which so they could be good at something.
