Mobile - Wireless Technology News New Phones, New Services, New Problems Oct 12, 2006 - Linknet Marketing News >>> For electronics press releases visit electronic specifier. >>> As new technology is developed to make wireless communication reliable and ubiquitous, we have become more dependent on cell phone technology. Todd Cardin WSR But mobile technology remains vulnerable and anything but robust. One consolation is that as major telcos move towards upgraded infrastructures based on digital technology, their service has, in many cases, become less reliable as well. Choosing Between Cell Phone Providers Jan 29, 2007 - Linknet Mobile News >>> How To Determine Which Cell Service Is Best For You by Jon Arnold With every cell phone carrier advertising their latest cell phones and super plans, it gets more and more difficult to determine which one is the right one for you. How do you know? If you live in a major metro area or almost any larger city, the plans, service and coverage are going to be pretty much the same. But if your intended usage is outside the major metro areas or you will be using your cell phone all over the place because you plan to travel a lot with it, then this is where the rubber meets the road and the RIGHT plan takes significantly more scrutiny. Before going any further, it is important to note that you need to define what you plan to do with your cell phone. Now with that said, throw that note away. What you really need to determine is what ARE you going to be using it for, and what capabilities and functionality do you REQUIRE (not just merely “want” or find somewhat cool or desirable) with your cell phone and cellular service? If you don’t define this BEFORE you start shopping, it is almost inevitable that you are going to be spending more than you need to... Call Philippines for as low as 2 cents/min. >>> 2007 to be big year for wireless integration - We've been hearing for years how television and internet services will inevitably be integrated by carriers such as the large telco and cable companies. 2006 was the year VoIP really came of age and the cable companies started integrating voice over ip with their other services. Big deal, right... All signs point to 2007 being the year that wireless is added to the mix in a serious way. The telcos have been dragging their feet (as they usually do), letting the big cable providers lead the way. Adding wireless to the services bundle offered by cable operators -- which already includes television, video, internet, and telephone services -- looks like a no-brainer. It means more than just integrating billing for customers, or consolidating services to one provider. Adding wireless to the bundle is the way providers can really give customers mobile access to a much broader range of services. Wireless is seen as the glue that will ultimately hold it all together. It will give customers mobile access to services such as email, web surfing, telephony, and eventually video and even television programming. Major cable providers such as Comcast, Advanced Newhouse, Cox, and Time Warner are rolling out pilot programs early in 2007 that will give customers access to email, cable TV guide and home voice mail from their integrated mobile phones. Voip for Mobile Phones Being Rolled Out Feb 16, 2007 - Mobile Info >>> VoIP for Cell Phones on the Horizon - PCWorld.com reports that Avi Shechter, co-founder and CEO of Fringland Ltd. (Fring), could be on to something big with the launch of a cheap Internet-based phone service that runs over mobile networks. The service is essentially a peer-to-peer VoIP service (think Skype) that uses cell networks rather than WiFi or broadband Ip connections. To make it work you must have a Nokia Series 60 3rd edition phone and download the 200kb Fring application to your handset. Fring expects the application to soon run on other phones and operating systems such as Windows Mobile. The application will connect with Skype, Google Talk and MSN Messenger. Just as with Skype, once a contact is added to your contact list you will be able to see when your contacts are online and then communicate directly with them. Billing from your cell provider will be based on your data plan, rather than your voice plan. If Fring callers want to access the public telephone system they can do so using Skype out. That carries an additional charge, but making international calls with your cell phone will be considerably cheaper than using typical cell networks. Because of the potential loss of lucrative voice business cell phone networks are likely to resist this move. T-Mobile International AG & Co. KG, have banned the use of VOIP applications on their networks, and other networks are considering doing the same. High Speed Wireless Service Introduced by Korean Company July 2, 2006 - Linknet Mobile News Philippine, India phone cards - Call Philippines, India for as low as 2 cents/min. On May 16th, SK Telecom(SKT) began the world's first commercial High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) service in South Korea. South Korea already has an advanced internet infrastructure, and this new service greatly expands potential internet access for mobile devices. This was followed up on June 30 with the introduction of commercial services for WiBro (Wireless Broadband Internet.) WiBro and HSDPA offer super high-speed wireless internet mobility. WiBro is built around data communications and HSDPA has been upgraded from audio only to include data communication services in order to eventually accommodate greatly expanded multimedia data flows. WiBro, the much talked-about high speed mobile internet provides wireless internet access just about anywhere (even with moving at 60Km) using various machines. In addition, it is reasonably priced for given high-speed data transfers. In real world tests the current implementaion of HSDPA can handle between 2 -3 Mbps data transfer -- fast enough to support high speed mobile internet services. Its theoretical tranfer rate is 14.4 Mbps, so there is tremendous potential for future improvements in the service. The implementation of this new technology should open up significant market possibilities -- for instance in the expansion of wireless internet services, and in particular for the transmission of multimedia services. But significant development has to take place before this technology matures. The coverage area is currently quite small, the data transfer rate must be developed to handle larger volumes, and of course multimedia content must be developed or reworked in order to give companies a reason to adopt the new technology. Can You Anticipate The Cell Phones Of The Future? May 7, 2006 - Linknet Technology - Mobile and Wireless Technology, Computers Reduce mobile phone costs - Save hundreds of dollars on your mobile phone costs with this Insider's comparison guide. by Keith Kingston We have become a society that demands the most technologically advanced equipment, and cell phones are no exception. That's why the cellular telephone industry is changing so rapidly. Today's phones are quite impressive with many bells and whistle, but wait, the cell phones of the future are like something out of a sci fi movie. Who would have dreamed that we'd come this far in such a short time? The cell phones of tomorrow are so compact that you'll need a beeper just to find where you left them. Current phones are incredibly tiny but they are going to get even smaller. You'll be able to purchase a watch with cell phone and all you'll have is a headset to talk with. Of course it will be all voice activated. The phones that are simply a tiny screen with wireless headset are also on the horizon. Cell Phones and Kids Mar 21, 2007 - Wireless News >> Kids & Cell Phones - by Robert Lett Is it safety? Is it security? Or is it just cool? Have you ever noticed how many kiosks have popped up in you favorite mall? And just about all of them are selling cell phones. Teens can actually design their own graphics and have the graphic airbrushed on the face of the phone itself. They face plates and antennas that light up on each ring. Just drop by a kiosk next time your at the mall, you'll see what I mean. In a resent Los Angeles Times article, they stated that teens with cell phones were at around 16% on average. I think by 2005, it will more of an average of 50% or even more. Cell phones seem to be a great security feature for the parents. They can now be 'connected' to their children 24 hours a day, 7 days week, and 365 days a year. And of course, it allows the child to dial 911 if an emergency arises. And now with the GPS Location Sensitivity feature, your child will be located during that emergency with ten feet of the phones location. Of course, with all this technology and added security, there are a few problems. The school systems are being cluttered with phone calls in the middle of class. And there is always the problem with calls in the hallways and bathrooms going on continuously. Most schools are adopting the "use it during school - you loose it" policy. This has become a real burden on school administrators. Their parents as far as carrying the phones themselves back the children. So this isn't something they can take away and keep until the end of the year. They must give the phones back at the end of the day. This is usually enough of a deterrent to keep them off during school hours... New Graphical Ads on Mobile Phones from Yahoo Nov 15, 2006 - Linknet Mobile News - >> Yahoo takes ads on mobile phones to the next level - Yahoo's Mobile Web service has proved to be reasonably successful, and the company sees big things for the future. Some Advantages of VoIP Ip telefoni - Telefoni leverer telefoniløsninger til danske virksomheder både som traditionelle prefix-løsninger og som komplette access-produkter. With VoIP, instead of using traditional land lines to make voice calls, you use a broadband connection to the Internet. That allows you to bypass the telephone company (to a large degree) and thereby avoid their charges. This also allows VoIP providers to bundle add-on services that regular phone companies charge for, such as voice mail, call forwarding, and call waiting. It is the digital nature of VoIP that makes this possible. When you look at the numbers, VoIP services cost about half the cost of traditional phone services. One big reason is that many VoIP services in the United States and Canada allow you to call anywhere in North America at no extra charge. So long distance charges are completely eliminated. This is the cash cow of the traditional phone companies. Of course as VoIP becomes more widespread and is generally adopted by major telcos and cable providers we can expect these fees to creep back in. Rogers Cable in Canada, for instance, offers free phoning across Canada only to other Rogers customers. Consumers Not Excited about Mobile Wallet Concept According to a recent study by In-Stat, U.S. consumers are lukewarm to the idea of using cell phones as mobile wallets. This is an idea that was being pushed in the 90s as "M-Commerce" -- using cell phones as mobile payment devices. But the current manifestation of the idea sees mobile wallets carrying electronic versions of other things usually found in wallets -- membership cards, loyalty cards, and other forms of identification. Mobile Phone Misuse Tackled by Scottish Educators Jan 2/07 - Linknet Tech News >> Low cost PC to Phone - Save up to 90% on International Calls with Low Cost PC to Phone. >>> The Scotsman reports that schools are becoming more concerned about the potential for mobile phone misuse by children using camera and video phones to invade privacy of teachers and fellow students, and even bully other students. As a result the The Educational Institute of Scotland has sent a "guidance pack" with a number of policies on mobile use to all schools in Scotland. One concern is with the practice of "happy-slapping" in the playground. This is where camera phone images and video clips are uploaded to sites like Youtube.com where they can be viewed by thousands or even millions of people. This is also happening to teachers -- they are being photographed or videoed without their knowledge. In the eyes of Educational authorities this is clearly an unwanted invasion of privacy and must be policed by teachers and school staff members. |
