Brothers Play Catch with Chicken Heads, Die of Bird FluBrothers Play Catch with Chicken Heads, Die of Bird Flu Linknet Health News, January 8, 2006
Two teenage brothers died of bird flu in eastern Turkey last week, according to the World Health Organization. They confirmed the boys had been infected with the H5N1 strain.
This is the first time the virus has killed humans outside of East Asia. Several other people were also under observation in Turkish hospitals, suspected of having the disease, and the EU is on high alert.
Health officials fear the virus may mutate and become contagious from human to human and begin the "pandemic" everyone is predicting.
In this case, the boys had been playing catch with the heads of dead chickens, but other children in the family were also hospitalized. One subsequently died and another is recovering.
Health officals are investigating.
Meanwhile, more than 2 million children died from malaria last year. Most of them were in Africa.
